All Massachusetts elementary, middle and high schools fall under town jurisdiction. The state mandates attendance for children between ages 6 and 16 and requires each school system to operate kindergartens. However, the state does not require children to attend kindergarten. A child must be enrolled in first grade within the calendar year in which he/she turns six.
